In the leather and motorcycle subculture, a run is a planned group trip, ride, or weekend-long gathering hosted by a club or organization.
Origins of the term
- Motorcycle roots. The term comes from post-World War II motorcycle clubs, both straight clubs and early queer ones like the Satyrs. Members would ride their motorcycles together to a designated destination, campsite, or host city. That group journey was literally a “run,” a ride on the road.
- Club social gatherings. As the leather community grew out of these biker and military-inspired fraternities, the word kept its meaning. A “run” came to mean a hosted weekend event, social gathering, or party organized by a local or regional leather or kink club.
- Destination events. Modern leather runs often feature weekend itineraries of club nights, dinners, gear markets, charity fundraisers, and socializing, rather than just motorcycle riding. The travel-and-gather tradition remains at the core.
